What the Paraquat lawsuits are about
Paraquat (sold as Gramoxone and other brands) is a restricted-use weed killer used in agriculture. Thousands of lawsuits allege that people exposed to it at work later developed Parkinson's disease. These are allegations; courts and firms decide each matter on its own facts.
Mixing and loading
Paraquat is concentrated and is mixed with water in a tank before spraying. Workers often mixed and loaded it by hand.
Spraying fields
Applied with tractor boom sprayers or backpack sprayers on farms, orchards and along field edges — often season after season.
Crop-duster flagging
Flaggers stood in the field to guide low-flying crop dusters, sometimes under the spray itself.
Parkinson's disease: common signs
Parkinson's is a brain disorder that affects movement. The U.S. National Institutes of Health lists four main motor symptoms. Only a doctor can diagnose it.
Tremor
Shaking, often starting in a hand or fingers.
Stiffness
Muscles that stay tense and tight.
Slowed movement
Everyday actions take longer to start and finish.
Balance problems
Changes in posture, balance and walking.
Other effects can include sleep problems, a quieter voice, trouble swallowing, fatigue, pain, and changes in mood or thinking.
